Again I am realizing how often Logan's blog is not updated.
Logan is doing well. He is coming into the age where he is learning about social and emotional adjustments. I think as much of that is timing and age of awareness. Things have been a little troubled for Logan these past few weeks learning to deal with emotions that he is not used to. Loss of friends, conflict and things of that nature. I continue to pray for Logan as he tries to learn these life lessons. I am just now starting to realize that we don't get to shelter our children, even our precious hemi kids, from the world and the things that we will all face. This is a learning curve for me too certainly.
Logan is doing well with his therapy and developmental planning. Things are better this year at this time than they were last year, for sure. Thank God.

Being a Mom is such a Blessing. Logan has been the light in my life for almost 5 years now. I never knew how one special child could inspire me to want to be my best every day for him. I Pray that God will provide me Grace and Wisdom every day be the best Mom I can be for Logan. That is my Mother's Day wish.

God Bless,

Mary & Logan

Accordions and Drums

It has been quite some time since I have posted. Not sure if anyone would even check anymore as it has been so long. Logan is doing great.

He woke up one Sunday morning and told me something very interesting. He said "Momma, I need an accordion." I of course thought about all the therapeutic value that an accordion would have reciprocal motion of both arms from the shoulder down and he is actually interested. We just got his new pint sized accordion on Tuesday (yesterday). It surely isn't quite like he had imagined... but he is still interested. He told me that it was hard... which it is.

Logan has a true love for music. It seems to be growing into something that he might want to explore. I will have some pictures soon for Logan. He just got a big surprise this week that has not been unveiled yet, as I am waiting for the weekend.

I would like to mention also The Hemispherectomy Foundation . They have been such a light in the darkness at times. Letters, cards and goodies for Logan. What a great job they all have done and Jessie Hall as well. They have all Blessed so many families by their willingness and drive.

God Bless,

Mary & Logan

The Results are In......

I received an email from Dr. Chugani's nurse letting us know that Logan's MRI results look good. There is part of the MRI reading that we are still waiting on - which will look specifically at reorganization after the hemispherectomy. This is a little more detailed and we are anxious to confirm what we already know.

We are all completely relieved and happy with the results. This does not come as a complete shock by any stretch as Logan has been doing very well. Every time we see someone that has not seen him in several months they are amazed at his ability to communicate now.

We feel very Blessed. On another positive note I recently completed by Bachelor's Degree (the day we left for Detroit actually). I am currently interviewing for Graduate Programs. February has been a great month. I am glad that all of the friends that we have made along the way are doing well post surgery also. Blessed we are!

God Speed,

Mary & Logan

Back in Texas

We made it safe back to Texas late Saturday evening. Unfortunately, I came back with a stomach virus that kept me down for a couple of days. Logan is glad to be home. He has made it known that he has no use for seeing doctors at the current time. He felt so inclined to tell a couple of doctors that as well. We are still awaiting the results of Logan's MRI scan. I am excited because I know that it will be more good news. God has been so good to us it is amazing.

We were able to visit with some of the people that we met during out stay for Logan's surgery. In particular Irma at the Ronald Mc Donald House and Laurie a PT as Children's. We wanted to thank both of them for their love and support.

I will post when I have more details regarding Logan's MRI results. Thanks for reading.

God Bless,

Mary & Logan

Phenominal News

Logan met with Dr. Rothermell, Neuropsychologist and Dr. Chugani, Chief of Neurology today. Both had good reports of what they saw with Logan. Dr. Rothermell performed three cognitive tests with Logan and they scored well comparatively to Logan's past scores. He was impressed with Logan's progress however did note a couple of things that we need to focus on. We next had our appointment with Dr. Chugani, when we showed up his wonderful nurse Ruth Roeder told me, we already got an email from Dr. Rothermell and he told us how wonderful Logan is doing. She said being the pragmatic man that he is, that means that he was blown away by Logan's progress. Dr. Chugani had some suggestions as well for what Logan could benefit from, but overall is in complete awe of his progress. Ruth made it very clear that comparatively Logan is doing much better than expected in many areas, especially his ability to "get around."

This was a successful day and a great piece of mind to know that I am not just blind by love for Logan, that he really is..... doing so well. We are certainly expecting this to be a good visit, with nothing but great news.

God Bless,

Mary & Logan

Time Flies and so do we..... back to Detroit

Logan is doing so well. This is him recently watching Noggin with his horses. He likes to line them up and watch a program every now and again.

It is difficult to believe that it has already been over a month since I last posted. I am forced to ask myself where the time went. Good things have been happening. Logan still has many appointments that keep us very busy. The hard work that he is willing to do is paying off.

We leave on Monday 2/2/ for Detroit, for hopefully one last trip unless we should decide to vacation. Logan will have a visit with Dr. Chugani his neurologist and a few follow up tests. Every indication would be that Logan is having no complication from the surgery or unexpected affect. I Pray that what my eyes don't see is the same things that my eyes do see, God's healing in Logan and the continued hope for a triumphant life. We are scheduled to return on Sat. 2/7.

I will keep the blog updated often while we are gone. I think that I have said before that I will keep it updated more often when we are in Texas also. It just does not seem to happen.

Thanks for reading. God Speed. We will be posting soon with progress and positive news.

God Bless,

Mary & Logan

Christmas is upon us.

As the Christmas Season nears closer each day, with only days to spare; I am reminded of the most important gift that God has. It is not necessarily shiny or new has no particular brand name or emblem on the hood or finger size. It is the gift of life. I have learned over the past 4 years of Logan's life that the most important time that we have is now, the most Blessed tomorrow relies upon how we choose to spend this moment. All of the struggles that Logan and his entire family have endured on his behalf were for the Blessed tomorrow. I can say, without reservation, that tomorrow has arrived. Blessed we are beyond measure. I never thought my ears would hear the beautiful sound of Logan explaining in his eloquence that he loves me backwards, upside down and side ways. Logan told me that God made a good mommy. That is the best Christmas present for all of my life. What a gift it is. All of the struggles and tears, wins and losses will take you to a place when you will know that you have fulfilled what you needed to do. In that moment one could only know that they had done as they should have done, as God would have you to do.

I am encouraged each day at the prospect of each tomorrow. Logan is doing fabulous and continues to learn. He has enjoyed his classroom alot more this year than years past as he is learning and applying new skills and concepts.

We are scheduled to be back in Detroit the first week of February 2009 for some follow up testing. I am believing that Logan will come home with no additional surgeries and that Logan's phenomenal medical team will be astounded as to his clarity and progress. There is a good distance to go for Logan to reach his potential but potential is all we see.

Thank you for reading and may you have a Blessed Christmas full of God's hope and a New Year that exceeds all expectations.

Mary & Logan

Still Riding Tall

Logan is still riding his horses and loving it. He is learning some basic Spanish and Computer skills which he is very happy to tell you about. He is learning at the speed of light and some times that seems to overwhelm him. We hope that everyone has a very Happy Thanksgiving!

I am so glad to say that we are so busy that the opportunity to posts passes by. I am hearing so many positive things from his teachers and really just everyone that interacts with Logan. In some ways I have really been challenged because Logan is not the same child that he was before his surgery. He is very alert and inquisitive now, which are wonderful great things. He is FULL OF ENERGY. I am certain that some day his school will tell me that he can't come anymore because he does not need a nap anymore. He is just really concentrating on learning and observing Logan you can see that he is intentionally placing himself around others that he can learn from. WOW! I am surely tired - but DEFINITELY amazed.

God Speed,

Mary & Logan

Moving Forward

Logan is doing very well and moving forward every day! We have been incredibly busy with school and activities for Logan to enrich his new found "need for speed." He is still a daily inspiration with his kind heart and lovable ways. He continues to progress and we will now begin some more intensive therapy into next month.

Logan's EEG results came back and it would appear that there are no concerns. This test will be sent to Dr. Chugani in Detroit to confirm the findings of Dr. Malik here at Cook Children's. (EEG pattern identified as IS). This Doctor is one of the best, not that you don't have great doctors, but I always wanted all the help I could get.

Dr. Harry Chugani - Chief Neurologist @ Children's Hospital of Michigan. He CARES for his kids immensely, as you can see I can not tell you enough to describe how great it is to have this man caring for Logan's health.

He does do something via email, telephone such as consult and review. I found him from other parents that had similar challenges. He did oversee Logan's hemispherectomy that was performed by Dr. Sandeep Sood, Neuro - Surgeon @ Children's Hospital of Michigan.

I hope that this helps. We have been in similar situations with medications not working, clusters returning, and it just breaks your heart; I do understand.

God Bless,

Mary

Thanks and Prayer Request

This past Saturday the Men's Group from the Abbey Church brought over the big guns, BOBCAT, and starting getting the yard ready for Logan's wish to be granted. There was alot of leveling and cleaning of concrete. I must tell you how THANKFUL I feel. I never would have been able to arrange that myself and they all wanted to help. What a wonderful Blessing. The Abbey Church is very committed to community and have really been a Blessing to Logan and I. We have made some good friendships there...
I am so excited about Logan's wish, I have been keeping it a secret from him so that he will be surprised. Just a few more weeks and it will be the big reveal.

Logan will be having a One Hour EEG on Wednesday @ Cook Children's Medical Center to make sure that it is still looking good. With absence seizures it is very difficult to tell if it is day dreaming or really a seizure. So we are going to make sure that everything is still as we expect it to be, which is NO MORE SEIZURES.

Logan is truly enjoying his horse riding and just learning every day. He has started telling me "go chica, go chica, go chica!" I can only imagine that he picked this up at school but he thinks it's really cute to tell me that; and well.. I think that it is really cute too.

Through some serious advocating Logan has begun some therapy at Cook's and we will continue to add to that as we work with the insurance company and different providers. I am becoming very educated beyond my formal education in advocacy and case management. I am seeing results though and that is a huge reward.

Have a great week, and please keep Praying for Logan.

God Bless,

Mary

School Daze and Cowboy Ways

Logan is still enjoying school (daycare). He really does look forward to all of the interaction at school and the challenge of being a real Cowboy all at the same time. He takes a horse to school with him almost every day. A different one of course so that he can carry it around. How could you be a cowboy without a horse?

This is Logan with Ms. Vickie, one of his teachers. We saw Dr. Malik yesterday, he is Logan's neurologist at Cook Children's Hospital. Just to make sure that things are going okay Dr. Chugani has requested these tests be performed. He is enjoying being with his friends and his two teachers. We started some therapy this week but of course nothing beats his Saturday horse riding rendezvous. He really looks forward to that. He wakes up every morning and asks me "Mommy, what day is today?" and I tell him the day of the week and he knows that he is just wanting me to tell him that it is Saturday. He is very interested in things that we was not before and very aware of the people in his life that love him and are there for him. This is a great time of growth and development for Logan and discovery. It is such a Blessing to see him discover more of his depth every day. He is such a bright, brilliant little boy that has such a future ahead of him; I really to BELIEVE.

Blessed I am. What a gift God gave me when he gave me Logan.

Mary

Make a Wish

Great news! Logan has received approval for a wish granted by the Make a Wish foundation. This is Logan when we met with his assigned Wish Granter, Nancy Lopez.

The only next step is paperwork that has to be signed by Logan's Dad so that should not take long at all. Logan is very excited.
His wish is to have a "park" (play-set with swings and slide etc) in his backyard or to stay on a Dude Ranch or working ranch in the barn with the horses. I think that Logan likes the word Dude and the fact that it goes with the word Ranch is even better. He smiles whenever he says "Dude Ranch" now he is a Dude!
Logan will begin Therapeutic Horse riding today thank you to his Granny who has sponsored Logan for this six week session. Logan is very, very excited to be back at Swan View. I will wake him up shortly and get him ready for "horse day!"
Have a great Saturday. Logan was very excited to sit on her and content just to stay there. He cried a bit when it was time to get off. Everyone was so very nice. I have not been in a stable/horse show environment since I was a kid. It brought back alot of fond childhood memories for me seeing Logan enjoy himself.

For all those wondering if I am crazy for letting Logan ride so soon after his surgery.... ; )....
He rode tandem with Kathleen Thatcher the owner/instructor of Swan View Therapeutic Riding Center. She had just ordered up a special saddle that served the purpose well. She is just awesome with these kids.
The other pictures that I took turned out way too dark due to the arena being indoors and quite some distance. Logan clapped for himself numerous times and was so proud that he was a horseman once again.

Logan was in his element that day. I got to meet another young man, late teens, that has been riding for quite a while. His Dad gave testament to the value this activity has had in his son's life and progress. I hope someday that we will be able to sponsor children to ride through a non-profit scholarship.

Have a great Monday!

Yee- Haw.

Horse Heaven!

Logan has been asked to ride in a horse show in Glen Rose this weekend. Camino Real, which he will be riding with Kathleen Thatcher, the owner/instructor of Swan View Therapeutic Riding Center located in Boyd. Kathleen called me end of last week and extended an invitation to Logan to ride in this no cost event for children that have participated in her program.

We went to see Kathleen last night at Swan View and Logan was the most excited about anything that I have seen or atleast remember in days if not weeks. I can tell that this is really something that Logan loves to do and the passion for horses has kept him through all that he has been through. It has been a Blessing to us for him to have something to call his own and be able to identify with. This activity gives Logan an identity other than his disabilities, conditions, challenges etc. (you get the point)

I would like to some day start a Non-Profit Organization that will sponsor children, where appropriate, for Therapeutic Horse Riding or in some instances Hippotherapy. I truly believe in the therapeutic value of the physical involvement with the horses as well as the emotional value. This is a dream of mine and Logan's to help other children be involved in community, integration is very important for a plethora of reasons. I have a complete new appreciation for horses over these last several months.

Logan is doing well in school. He is involved in several enrichment programs to jump start his learning and give him abundant stimulus and input to facilitate creation of new nuero-pathways in a dynamic multi faceted nature. Logan is learning more and more with every passing minute. Logan is telling me how to pronounce my words now. Apparently his listening ears do work and he is repeating some of the techniques that I use to work out his words. It's just great!

I stand corrected, Logan! It is a La-bor-a-tory! Everyone is listening and watching your miracle life unfold in our presence; how Blessed we are to know you and thankful we are to have you!

Have a great day!

Mary

Back to School

This will be Logan's first full week back to pre-school. He is excited about being with his friends and a little less excited that mommy can't stay at school with him. We have formed a very promising partnership with his school director, Audrey Rowland. She will begin tutoring Logan, as only she could. When I tell you that she is fab-u-lous; I really mean it.

These past two weeks have been productive yet challenging getting all of the services that Logan needs to continue his Journey to Truimph. We are still working out the therapy details (and that includes many, many disciplines of therapy.)

Logan has adjusted wonderfully to all of the changes and being busy. I will say a special Prayer for his teachers that he will start taking naps on a regular basis. This is one area where he is having some challenges, he just doesn't sit still for very long. Whew! he can really wear you out.

I hope that everyone has a great Monday. There will be some school pics to come once we get clearance from the school to do so.

Thanks,

Mary

Fabulous Sunday

Time seems to get too far by from post to post. I will be updating more often now that we are settled in better since our return home.

This past Sunday the Home Coming Celebration at The Abbey Church was FABULOUS. The Hall Family, and representation from the Hemispherectomy Foundation was present. Logan began quite the little preacher man as well, his first debut "speaking the Word."

This is Logan on stage with the Mic. Helping Pastor Paul tell it. Logan's word for the day was POSSIBLE. That was his word from God to let everyone know that if you believe it, IT IS POSSIBLE. The Abbey Church made us feel very welcome and had done a very nice reception area for Logan, in a horse theme. THANK YOU! We are so very greatful to have a wonderful Church and so much more to call HOME.

This is Logan riding a horse that one of the kind party goers got for Logan. This horse has meant more than words can say to Logan. There is quite a story that goes with this horse and I could not find one at any retailer in Oklahoma. Logan has held tightly to the reins since the day this horse became his.

This is Logan with Cris, Kristi & Jessie Hall and myself of course. He was not about to let the horse out of his sight and quite a nice resting place for him as well. It was wonderful to meet the Hall family and see Jessie. Having these two together was very moving and such a Blessing to many people. I look forward to more interaction between our families and building some connections for the Hemispherectomy Foundation.

A picture of Cris, Kristi & myself. I can't express our gratitude that they were in attendance. It meant alot to have that show of support for Logan.

This week was back to school and back to work today for me. Logan is having some difficulty adjusting to the changes, but once his day gets going at Preschool he does very well. Thank you to the Kid's Place staff for making Logan feel so welcome and to Audrey Rowland for taking personal interest in Logan and becoming his tutor and my mommy-gone education trainer.

Love and many Blessings,

Mary

Home Coming Celebration

Logan is still doing great. Driving into the driveway the yard looked so nice and the flower bed was beautiful, Emily Hanson is a much better gardener than me; for the record. What a sweet sight home was for both of us. Logan exclaimed in disbelief, "mommy, we are home!" once we got into our house. He then immediately asked me if we could go get Kay Rollins and see the tiny cuties and have our much discussed picnic. (are you listening Kay? ;)

I was very anxious to see a project that my brother in-law, Nic Crites, has been working on along with my Dad, Mike Boyd... a newly remodeled bathroom. That term does not do this bathroom justice, from where it was to what it is now is absolutely amazing. I was so happy that I cried. The crying was not because we needed a new bathroom as a "reward" or to make me happy it was because you can feel the love that went into this project when you walk in the door. WHAT AWESOME GOODNESS!

Logan was the first to use the Jacuzzi tub at first he was scared, and then he laughed "mommy it's cooking bubbles!" And don't even think that I didn't wait up until 2:30 am to take a bath in it myself, awe!

Our family and friends have really made this traumatic, yet amazingly triumphant time for Logan so much easier; for both of us.

A heart of gratitude is what I have. I thank God every day for everything that he has provided and all the goodness that he has put in our path through all of the people that we love. Sniff, sniff; WE ARE HOME!

Logan is still doing very well. He will be getting continued rehab services set up this week and meeting with the gaggle of people here that will be providing those services. This will be a busy and very important week to set up his support system here. Pray that I don't lose my sanity! ;) or wait you can't lose something you don't already have, hmm.

God Bless and Love,

Mary & Logan

Safe Travels

Just a quick post to let everyone know that we are traveling home to Texas and will be there by the end of this week. We are safe and sound. Logan is an exceptional traveling companion, with the help of DVD's. Internet access is a little difficult therefore I will post more when we get home to Texas.

Things are going very well for Logan. I am in the planning phases, or the next stage now to ensure Logan's personal success. Please say a sanity Prayer for me as I line up everything that Logan needs.

God Bless,

Mary & Logan

Coming Home!

(Logan with some of his friends at RMDH - Detroit)

Logan was released from outpatient rehab today. We are planning on leaving Detroit this weekend. We are planning a slow and easy trip home. The outpatient team here in Detroit, as well as the rest of the people we have worked with, have been a true pleasure. Logan seems to have a good knack for creating a special bond with people that warms their hearts and brings a smile. I am glad that Logan is so outgoing and sweet.

Logan has met all of his goals here in the short term. Now the decisions come about follow up care and all the endless possibilities. Logan has an opportunity now to possibly make up for all the things that he lost in the developmental stages of the toddler years. The mission now is to enrich his knowledge and get him creating new neuro-pathways through targeted learning and academic stimulation. I have some preliminary plans to make this happen and am excited to see how things come along. Let the learning begin!

I am just in awe of the outcome of the surgery and so hopeful for Logan's future. I could not feel more Blessed by all of the endless opportunities that exist for Logan. I will, forever more, breathe deep each day with gratitude and Thankfulness to God for the precious life of Logan. I will continue to Believe each day, just like the day before, that Logan's Triumph is a permanent victory with only scars and a painful past that is no more. Being greatful for every moment of every day is the best way I know how to describe how it feels to have come through this on the other side. We have alot of work ahead of us in therapy back home and Logan.

We will be posting road trip takes within the days to come. Stay tuned.

God Bless,

Mary & Logan

Reflection on the Journey - Giving Thanks

I wanted to post a special thanks to some people that made Logan's Triumph a wonderful Journey. The thanks are not in order of importance because each person was/is so very important in Logan's life and my life. To Uncle Nic THANK YOU for volunteering to remodel our bathroom to a Logan friendly design. For naming a horse "Triumph" for Logan and giving him some thing to dream about in his little sweet dreams at night.

Emily Hanson - For going to my house several times per week faithfully to retrieve mail and water flowers and make sure that everything is in check. For being an awesome best friend for 20 years. For being real and understanding me to my last thread without saying too many words. For your love and kindness.

The Cargin Family - For taking care of the yard and making sure that people aren't living in my grass and waiting to yell "BOO" when I get home. But most of all for your friendship and Prayers. Logan is ready to come wrestle your children and run in fear from your 5 pound dog.

The Conant Family - For taking care of the yard and running the people off that the Cargin family found living in my grass. For being my personal fax service when I needed to take care of personal business. Most of all your friendship and Prayers. Logan is ready to come ride your golf cart and eat hot corn with Rich.

Everyone has made our lives much easier and made it much easier for me to be here doing what was most important. There are people that aren't on this post that have helped and been a support for us as well. I am greatful for the support system that Logan and I have in place and have come to realize through all of this how truly Blessed Logan and I are to have so many people that care.

Thank you for your endless Prayers, tears and now your hopes and dreams because as we can all see ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. God does deliver! Logan's Triumph has been delivered, and each day that goes by will be one more day that Logan is seizure free and free from the pain in his life that noone else could see. Logan is free to be the child that he was destined to become, Praise God! Logan is a fighter and a survivor God bless Logan always, Amen!

He is also a ladies man, but that discussion is for another day. ; )

Love,

Mary & Logan

Local News Coverage.

Last night back at home WFAA Channel 8 News did a bit on Logan's surgery and recovery. You can see the bit here http://www.wfaa.com/video/index.html?nvid=271852. Our family friend Kay had emailed the local news station and wanted Logan's story to be heard. Much to our surprise she emailed the news station and got a return reply the same day. They did a nice story and it is just uncanny that Jessie Hall and Logan do live ~13 miles from one another and had the same surgery on the same hemisphere of the brain.

Thanks Channel 8 for telling Logan's story. Thanks Kay for putting it out there. I know when you get a fire to do something it just some how gets done. Thanks Carla for using the video of you and your family when you came to visit Logan while you guys were here on vacation.

God Bless,

Mary & Logan

Soccer Monster!

This is Logan on Friday in therapy putting some heat on a soccer ball. I must say that he might be the next soccer star, he has quite a strong little kick and decent aim. He has really enjoyed the therapy team here and their approach to working with him. As you will notice in this picture he is standing on his left leg with no assistance and kicking with his right leg. A week ago he was not able to keep his balance to stand on his left leg without hand held assistance. He is coming along nicely. We all feel very Blessed getting to see Logan's recovery and how hard he works. Things aren't necessarily easy for him yet he presses on and does what he can the best he can.

This is Logan with his Physical Therapist, Laurie. He has gotten close to some of these people and actually likes "playing" with them most of the time. If you will notice his little crooked hat. He puts his hat on this way now because he does not see the bill of the hat in his field of vision as long as it is up and to the left. It's quite funny....... One of the guys around here jokingly was asking Logan if he was a punk, and he said "no I'm not the punk, what are you?" It was really funny with his little attitude that he had and his sunglasses on when the guy asked. He is full of personality and spunk.

I know why his teachers have that worn out look when I pick him up from school. He is a busy little boy but a very good boy. He tried really hard to make good choices and do what is asked of him.

Logan has been an inspiration to many families here at the RMDH of Detroit. I know that God is using Logan to give some of these parents hope and it has worked. So many people have told me that they will be so sad to see us go. He asks people how they are and how their family is and tells them, it will be good. He loves to visit and ask people questions.

Thanks for reading. I have not posted for a couple of days as I am battling a little cold and trying to rest as much as possible.

God Bless!

Mary & Logan

The Horseman vs The Cowboy

Logan has finally decided that it is okay to go back to Texas. Let me explain, the resident manager of the RMDH of Detroit, Irma, has become quite a friend to Logan. She is an awesome lady that loves to play with Logan. He really thought that we needed to just live here because it seems pretty fun and we get to watch alot of Elmo and Backyardagans. The idea of going on another long drive somewhere just did not sound like something he really cared to experience, again.
I told him that most Cowboys go back to the wild, wild west because they miss it. Logan told me that he is not the COW boy he is the HORSE man. So the little horseman and I will be planning to come home at the end of August or just in the beginning of September when the doctor releases him from rehabilitation.

This picture is of Logan on one of the trike in therapy. He is training to join the trike derby that Preschool 17 has each day at 10:30 am on the preschool play ground. Look out guys and gals Logan is coming back for more derby fun.

God Bless and have a wonderful day!

Mary & Logan

Follow-up with the Neuro-Surgeon HAPPY DANCE

Yesterday we had our follow up with Dr. Sood. Dr. Sood jokingly asked me, "is this the same boy that I did the surgery?" Indeed he was EXTREMELY pleased with how Logan is doing. He said that he felt like Logan has a very bright future and he was absolutely thrilled with all of the things Logan is doing so soon after surgery. He did advised that we will have to come back in six months to make sure that the cerebral fluid is circulating properly and if it is not (which is common) that they will have to do another operation to put a permanent shunt in Logan's head to drain the fluid into his stomach, which serves the purpose of natural body function.

So that is what we are Praying for now, NO SHUNT! No more surgery!

I love the cheesey grin that Logan has in this picture. He was absolutely happy to see Dr. Sood, which surprised me, since I have to coax him there by telling him that the doctors appointment was for me. Logan gave Dr. Sood a big hug and told him that he is going to be the doctor. Maybe you will little cowboy, maybe you will. I am beside myself with gratitude to this great medical team here and for answered Prayers.

We went to the farm right after the appointment. He was being very silly in our room and wanting to see his own picture on the "backside" of the camera. He has a ritual of going around the dining room and making new friends while everyone eats dinner if someone hosts a house meal. Everyone waits for Logan to come around and ask them, "what you got, what's your name." And he gives them a raspberry; sometimes with food in his mouth. We are working on that.....it's a bit awkward. ; )

Logan doing his impression of Chubby face. This interesting little goat that was behind a fence in the petting zoo stuck his head out when we walked by and let out a few ballads of his best goat tune; not so good.

Logan CAN RUN NOW, he ran so fast that I thought he was in the Nascar Foot Race Series. I don't even think that Logan knew he could run yet. Well, now he has running feet. Running faster by the hour, still a little unsafe; but fast.

So I have a new appreciation for goats! Who knew that goats had therapeutic value and his PT has been working so hard, all she had to do was get a goat!

Logan is still full of joy and light hearted about us being gone from home. He has a follow up appointment today with the Neuro- Surgeon Dr. Sood. It should prove to be a very successful visit.

Have a very wonderful day and be Blessed. Please say a Prayer for David today who will possibly be undergoing a similar surgery on Tuesday for a brain tumor; he is 17 years young.

Mary & Logan

Flying High!

Logan is doing great in outpatient rehab. He has managed to also begin to consider toilet training. (Thank God!) He still sleeps quite a bit but that is really just okay. He uses alot of energy and wants to walk every where that we go. He just pushes on and on.

He is actually making choices to use his left foot first when ascending or descending stairs. It is very difficult for him to put his left foot first when doing these things. Yesterday in therapy he chose to use "lefty leg" before the right leg. I have told him that cowboys have to do training to be real good cowboys. I think that Logan is going to be the best little cowboy ever. (I had already found horses to ride in Detroit so I knew I could back this up)

Logan is truly soaring with the eagles. I never could have expected so much so soon after surgery. His ability to hold a conversation has improved, life seems more clear and crisp to him. I can't even imagine what he can't verbalize because I never lived a day in his confusing world, inside his head. I am holding strong that the world has changed for Logan and that he can have some peace within his own body and mind. Ready to Rock Outpatient Rehab

Logan starts outpatient rehab today at Children's of Michigan and he is ready to rock that just like he did inpatient rehab. Logan will now be working on descending down a stair (curb) without handheld assistance. I know that he wants his running, jumping legs back so I am sure that we will be working on that. Playing tag with the cute little 4 year old girl, Emily, at the Ronald Mc Donald House was not nearly as fun walking as it would have been running.

Logan's stamina is coming back slowly but surely. He has not slept this long at night since we was a baby. I am glad that his body and mind are resting well to help him recover from the surgery. Things are going well in Detroit. I really could get used to this cooler than Texas summer, it really is nice.

Please say a prayer for Thomas and Shaun today. These young men are two gun shot victims that we met and they have a tough road to travel for recovery.

God Bless,

Mary

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://logansylva.blogspot.com/2008/07/tuesday-ready-to-rock-outpatient-rehab.html' title='Tuesday. Today we slept in at the Ronald Mc Donald House. What a guilty little pleasure that was and very nice to indulge. I felt so refreshed to get some sleep and so did Logan. He still gets very tired after walking around and interacting for a few hours that he needs a long nap to keep him going. He is being such a big boy and doing so well. We went to the park today and on our way through the parking lot he stepped on a rock and his Aunt Christine said, "be careful Logan, don't trip on that rock." Logan looked at the rock and said "oh, I'm sorry." It was so precious he must have thought that he was going to trip the rock. How sweet and innocent the thoughts of this little angel.

Each day just holds beauty before my eyes. Logan is full of kisses and raspberries (his latest obsession) and his eyes full of Light. I asked him today if he wanted a me to get him a dog when we get home and he said "no thanks, I have horse at my house." I know that he is dreaming of galloping through the fields.

Thankful I am for another awesome day. Logan is soaring with the Angels in his dreams as I type this. He has begun sleeping more peacefully these last couple of days. Sigh, God is good.

Mary

Who Caught the Ball, that's right BABY! (really his entire life for that matter) I am so proud of Logan for moving his legs while his whole body trembles to climb stairs, for opening his left hand to pick up an object while his tendons fight him to remain spastic. For pushing through the burning sensation in his thighs while he bends over to pick up a paper for another boy in a wheelchair and struggles to get back up. I am so proud of Logan for waking up every day and still loving life, and looking for a new adventure.

In FOUR years (his whole life) Logan has not had the use of his left arm and hand. I believe that is changing, just like a miracle unfolding day by day before my eyes. He is trying harder than ever before to use his left arm and hand. Logan has a fabulous future beyond the walls of this hospital, and beyond the boundaries of ordinary every day thinking.

Watching Logan in Rehab we can really see that Logan has worked hard, and given it his all to make his body work despite the difficulty that he has making the entire body work in orchestration together to do what you and I can do without even thinking about it. God is really delivering Logan's miracles on a daily basis. Logan's progress is so fast and strong, with an essence of Heavenly perfection that I can not describe it to you in words, because it is a feeling undescribable.

Thank God for Logan, and thank God for today. Thank God for our family, and friends. May we all be able to believe in and expect miracles to happen. I am in tears that my son, our Logan, caught a ball today! It really is the little things that matter most. Please take a moment today to give Thanks for all that we have to be greatful for, look around you and you will find so many little things that could also change your world in one moment.

Love,

Mary & Logan

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://logansylva.blogspot.com/2008/07/who-caught-ball-thats-right-baby-ca.html' title='Who Caught the Ball, that's right BABY! It is amazing to me how well he is doing. He is walking independently and almost completely safe. When he is tired, which happens fairly quick, he is not walking quite as well.

He is starting to make up songs about everything again just like he did before the surgery. His imaginary play has kicked into high gear right where he left off. (which is absolutely the most entertaining thing). He is giving perfect strangers raspberries on their arms when they least expect it. That really gets a mixed reaction.

God has really shown us what we prayed for Logan's recovery and so much more that I could have expected in my human mind.

This picture is of Logan taken today holding his card that all of his friends at school (daycare) sent to him from his class. Logan looks at this card a minimum of 4 times a day by request and holds it on his lap as he watches movies. This card has meant so much to Logan reminiscing about all of his fun friends and the great things they do. I must say that the level of care that this daycare has provided and the love that they feel for Logan is quite overwhelming, it is inexplicable in ordinary words.

I feel compelled to dance in the streets of Detroit and shout, or as Linda Reid would say; do my HAPPY DANCE!

God Speed,

Mary & Logan

Gratitude

I wanted to send a post today to say Thank You to all of the people that are Praying for Logan. Logan is always full of spark and spunk. The first one to laugh or try to make you laugh with something silly. I really like this picture, I was trying to ask him to smile for the camera and he was being goofy and making noises. This will forever be marked as the scariest day of my life. I spent the day Praying for God to show me that I followed His will for Logan's life and did the right thing, made the right choice. As one of the other hemispherectomy parents put it; no parent should ever have to decide whether or not to remove one half of their child's brain. Looks just the same as most of the other hemispherectomy patients. The incision also goes in the center of the head to the forehead. It is healing very nicely. The patch is where Logan's drains were located. At the time of this picture they had just been removed.

This is Logan resting peacefully with all of drains out. It made him much more comfortable. Anyone that knows Logan knows that this is his favorite blanket, "cuckle bed." This blanket has been Logan's since before he was born. If this blanket to talk it would have something worthy of publishing.

So are you ready for this?

Remember, no doctor could tell us Logan's recovery requirements. It has certainly been a Pray and see exercise. Everyone including our best doctors were nothing more that THRILLED on this day.

This is Logan walking with a little support and balance from me.

Logan is very unsure of himself and lacks that pre-surgery self confidence that helped Logan along in life so much. We are currently working on that. I can't believe that this was one week after surgery. He cried the first steps that he took, so I did not force the camera issue. As of the date of this post he is walking without holding my hand. I shadow him as his balance is that of a toddler that has learned to walk for the very first time.

WALKING IS GOOD! We are so thankful.

*****On the Mend?*****

Logan is feeling a little better today. Gastrointestinal issues have calmed down and appear to be working themselves out. He did tell the nurse that tried to take blood this morning to leave the room with his little finger pointed up in the air as if to show her the door. He was not very accurate in attempting to get blood so we (Logan) decided now was not the time. ; )

Perhaps he will move to inpatient rehab today or tomorrow if he is able to get off the IV and keep some fluid down today. We have alot of work to do to get him back on his feet, and get his spirits back in order. Lolo will be back! WOW! Logan is doing okay he is still having some issues with nausea and eating. This is the primary concern right now as we can't move forward with much else until all of these things come back into working order. Logan is very anxious still and just trying to adjust in many ways. The therapy is scheduled to begin soon so we are hoping that his stomach troubles will get leveled out soon.

The pic below is of Logan at his 4th Birthday party in June. I wanted to share that smile with everyone. It won't be long and that wonderful smile will be back.

Thank you to everyone for your Prayers, Love and Support. He is still sleeping alot and trying to move around a little more. He has two drains coming from his head. One EVD (external ventricular drain) and one JP. The EVD is to drain the cerebral fluid that can build up and cause fever. The EVD is placed in the cerebral cavity. (ouch) The CHM Neuro-Surgery team is one of the few that utilizes this method from what I understand. Logan has had no fever and this has also prevented cerebral fluid from building up in places that it does not belong. The JP drain is the red bulb in the picture that is draining blood from the surgical site between the skin and skull. This helps to minimize swelling. On Friday Logan was the most swollen and was unable to open his right eye, which made for a hard day since his vision in his left is fairly weak.

Logan's mood is very melancholy. The Dr's said that this is expected and his personality may not return for several days. Logan always has that spark that lights up any room and seeing him with no spark is very difficult. Next time he screams in the middle of the store, I am going to remember these words and ask him to do it twice.

It would appear that Logan's left leg is considerably weaker than before. We are anticipating that he will need to work on relearning to walk, and to walk safely. I know as God has promised Logan has been Healed perfect in His sight. Our eyes and thoughts are trying to catch up with God's perfect plan for Logan's life. Today has been a thoughtful day and a somber day. Tomorrow is new and each day full of more hope than the last. Recovery has begun.

Thank you everyone for your Prayers and posts. I have been reading each and every one of them. It is encouraging and uplifting during this difficult time.

God Speed.

Too Much Itching

Logan has been itching ALL day from the morphine. He is itching so much it is making everyone else itch. The Dr's have switched his medication and it appears to be working. I would like for everyone to Pray for NO MORE ITCHING. It really is driving Logan crazy and causing him to try to pull off his head bandage.

Today has been otherwise a great day. No fever, the swelling is still alarming to everyone that sees him. The medical team assures me that his swelling is very expected and that he is still very safe. Logan is doing good, actually Logan is doing great. His strength amazes me and teaches me so much everyday.

I am thankful tonight that God chose me to be Logan's mom. I must admit, it looks mighty uncomfortable to be that swollen.

Logan had a CT scan today, we will wait to hear the results of the scan from the doctors. So far we have not witnessed any seizures and have had no issues with fever. The recovery is going very well and Logan has certainly surpassed the expectations of most of the doctors, moving right and left side of his body.

We met with the Rehab team today and Logan will be in the Hospital for some inpatient therapy that will benefit him.

It's been a good day. The medical team is working hard to keep Logan comfortable. The level of care here at Children's Hospital of Michigan is great, I just can not say enough praise for Dr. Sandeep Sood (surgeon) and Dr. Harry Chugani (neurologist) . They have been a true pleasure to work with and treat Logan as if he is their own.

Logan is very swollen and uncomfortable. We can all imagine that would be the case. No one got much sleep wanting to be by his side. His Dad, Val, took the long, late shift; God bless him for that as it could not have been easy to do.

I will post another update later in the day. Please keep Praying for Logan to have peace and rest for his speedy recovery.

He made it very clear today non-verbally that he wanted to see the tiny, cutie horse very soon.

Logan's Fan Club

A Horse Named Triumph: And a Destiny of the Same Name

This is Logan's horse named Triumph.

Also... early this evening Logan was moved to from the OR recovery into PICU. We (Val, Granny Judy, and myself) were able to see him quickly in the hall as they were moving him.

Logan had been asking for me... he was already talking. How AMAZING is that? When he saw me he said "I want my mommy." Those are the best words I have heard my entire life. The nurses reported that he had already moved all of his extremeties on both sides which has shocked them all and began asking for mommy quite earlier than expected.

GOD IS SO GOOD! We feel so encouraged by the outcome of this day. We are all holding on strong to the promise of Logan's fabulous future.

It is currently 11:30 pm EST. We are having some metabolic issues with his levels, which is common after such a surgery. We are managing that fairly well. He woke up at 10:10 pm EST and put his right hand on his head and asked me after a few labored attempts to make his words, "Mommy, what's that." I told him that he had an ouchie and that the Dr.s fixed it and that he will feel better very soon. I Prayed over him for a quick recovery and peaceful rest tonight.

Thank you to everyone for your thoughts, posts and Prayers.

Mary & Logan

The Big Day

Logan has just been taken back for his surgery. He was in great spirits this morning playing with Elmo and imagining that we are Cookie Monsters. He started to get a little nervous as the time drew closer, but he never missed a beat. For the most part there are not many children here so Logan has decided that he will just have to talk to ALL of the adults. He has a great ice breaker. He walked up to one lady that is in the room next to us, Room 4, her name is Michelle and he blew a raspberry on here arm and said "I farted."

What can you say to that? He was admited on Saturday and release on Sunday for this test. He was a real trooper, he had to stay on this bed for 24 HOURS straight in front of a video/audio camera. We (Logan, Granny and myself) all played soccer in the park for a long time today. We went out to eat lunch as our celebration of the 4th of July.

Tomorrow Logan will be admitted to the hospital (Children's of Michigan) for a 24hr EEG which will detail the brain wave activity that he has. This is just another measure to make sure that nothing has changed from what is "expected" based on past tests.

Dr. Chugani seems to feel very positive about everything and the outcome of the surgery. He was not very excited to be there to say the very least. He said that he did not want a "stick and an ouchie." Today has been pretty rough. His legs aren't working very good as a result of the anaesthesia so I have carried him around more than nature will allow. He weighs in today at a healthy 51 lbs. The nurse was convinced that he will be a line backer. He showed them all how fast he was when he busted out the double doors of the MRI department. : )
We have met many families here at the Ronald Mc Donald House of Detroit that are going through such hard times. It was a really great place. It is a working farm with a petting zoo that is open to the public. (what would I do without Google Search) Logan was very HAPPY to see a horse in Horse City. ; )

As only Logan could, he said "MAMA that is a cutie, tiny pony." He refused to touch or feed the pony or any other animals for that matter but he sat on the grass in front of the ponys' fence and just watched. He was completely at peace with the world at that moment. A still calm was surrounding Logan in that place at that moment as if God held him in his very own arms. I am Blessed to know that Logan had that moment. Life's precious moments should be just that, precious. All of the moments of the day and tensions of driving were completely muted at this place, in this perfect moment for Logan.

The exam with Dr. Chugani went good today. He believes that Logan is a perfect candidate for this surgery and that it will improve Logan's quality of life. I will post pictures tomorrow of our farm visit. It is late and we have an MRI early in the morning. Thanks everyone for our prayers.

God Speed,

Mary & Logan

Road Trip!

We are slowly but surely working our way to Detroit. Logan has been very patient and inquisitive. We are going today to Gallrein Farms so that Logan can see some horses and hopefully pet them. He has been asking "where are we going" for the past 300 miles. The only answer that would suffice another 25 miles each time was "we are going to Horse City." This will forever be Louisville Kentucky to me. Since I had now put that out there I had to promptly locate some horses that Logan could see. He has been carrying around a horse that his Uncle Nic, Aunt Darla and cousins Gage and Cayden gave him since we left Texas. Horses are certainly his favorite thing to talk about, think about, you name it!

Will post more later and pics after we visit the farm. I am hoping that this will be a fun day for Logan. Wednesday starts the battery of tests and exams. Thank everyone for their Prayers and thoughts.

God Speed,

Mary & Logan

First Entry

This blog will be used to keep everyone updated on Logan's progress through our trip to Detroit to Childrens's Hospital of Detroit.
